Get Involved in Advocacy for Our Children!
Legislative Council Update

Fact:
Governor Schwarzenegger's 2010-2011 budget
proposal includes another $2.5 billion in cuts to public education.*

Fact:
State leaders have not approved a 2010-11
budget.*

Fact:
82% of Californians are against additional cuts to public education.*

What does this mean for the students and families of RBUSD?
For the 2010-2011 school year, our district will face additional budget cuts, fewer administrators, increased classroom sizes and fewer support staff. District-wide schools will have to do more with less.*

On March 9, 2010 the Redondo Beach School Board approved the first step to eliminate 32.2 positions. The Board also approved a resolution to oppose further state cuts to education and urges the legislature to make education a priority.**

What can you do to help?
There are many ways to get involved during these trying times.

1) Join the Legislative Committee. The Redondo Beach Council PTA has formed a Legislative Committee for the purpose of advocating on behalf of the schools locally and statewide. Currently the Committee is urging PTA members to support the Local Control of Classrooms Funding Act. This measure would reduce the threshold to pass a local school parcel tax from the current two-thirds vote to 55 percent. Passing a local parcel tax is one way to ensure a reliable source of local funds for schools. One million signatures are needed by May 1. If you have not yet signed the petition and are interested in doing so, please visit the campaign website at www.improvedschoolfunding.com.**

2) Join the CA PTA 9 Million Reasons to Speak Up Campaign. Visit capta.org for information, ideas and sample letters. Then write letters, call and visit state representatives.**

3) Support RBEF. The Ed Foundation is working hard to raise funds to save programs for our children like music and art.

4) Support your Beryl PTA. We need a Legislative Chairperson to seek current information and communicate advocacy strategies to the Beryl Community.

5) Attend RBUSD board meetings. The remaining meeting dates are May 11, May 25 and June 8.

6) Finally and most importantly, support your teachers. The teachers of Beryl are working hard to ease the impact of the budget crisis. Ask you teacher how you can help or simply thank your teacher for their outstanding work.

Thank you for all that you do!

President, Beryl Heights Elementary PTA

THANKS AND CONGRATS
PTA Service Award Recipients

PTA Very Special Person Service Award!

The recipient of the Very Special Person Award is Arianna Doykos. She is a high school senior, former Beryl student and an amazing young woman. Arianna began her service to Beryl and the South Bay Community thirteen years ago as a Daisy Scout.

This past summer she brought full-circle her dedication to the Beryl community by choosing our school for the Girl Scout Gold Award project. Arianna spent over 136 hours in post-construction chaos finishing a Rainforest Mural, repairing and updating our Contributor's Wall and transforming an overgrown patch of weeds into an "outdoor learning environment". Her work was a labor of love and a comfort to nervous parents and students, uncertain what to expect upon returning to their newly renovated school.

PTA Honorary Service Award!

The Honorary Service Award Winner this year is Linda Buck. In the four years our school has been blessed with Linda's presence, she has managed to run our Live Well program, the morning Running Club, the Gardening Club and co-chair our Jog-a-thon and this year's Parent Party/Silent Auction. Linda has worked on Walk to School Day, leads the morning Live Well exercises and is a regular volunteer in both of her childrens classrooms. Linda's commitment and spirit can be felt in the South Bay Community where she is a volunteer fitness teacher at both the YMCA and Beach Cities Health District. She is a wife and mother of two AND she's in excellent physical shape! More important than the quantity of Linda's service is the quality. Her love of school and community is obvious. She is always positive and wears a bright smile no matter the circumstances. She is amazing with the students, all of whom absolutely love her.
