California Common Core Standards

Common Core Connection

At Beryl, we have been focusing on the new Common Core standards. Each grade level has been planning and implementing new lessons, analyzing student work, reflecting as a team, and planning additional lessons based on student learning.

To further assist states as we continue to implement the Common Core State Standards (Standards), the Hunt Institute and the Council of Chief State School Officers have commissioned a series of video vignettes that explain the Writing Standards in far greater depth. Several of the key Standards writers were asked, in their own words, to talk about how the Standards were developed and the goals they set for all students. I encourage you to watch this informative 3-minute video to learn more about the Common Core writing standards:

All parents will benefit from taking a look at the Smarter Balanced Assessment website. The sample items provide an early look at sets of assessment questions aligned to the Common Core for grades 3–8 and 11 in both English language arts/literacy and mathematics. This year students in 3rd-5th grade will participate in a spring field test (results are not provided to school or parents) with the official implementation of the assessment system coming in 2014-15 (replacing STAR). These common core-aligned tests will be taken online. I encourage you and your child to try out a few practice questions. You and your child can view sample test items and performance tasks at:
